Our biggest dream is a permanent public sanctuary in Lafayette — a place where huskies are safe and where people come to learn, to visit, and to adopt. For now, that dream is paused. It is not abandoned.
There is no central home for the Siberian Husky in Louisiana. This is a demanding, high-energy breed that ends up in shelters far more often than most people realize, and there is no single place built to care for them, understand them, and match them with the right families.
Our fostering capacity has never fully recovered since the 2020 pandemic. When our foster homes are full, we have no choice but to turn huskies away — at times, hundreds of them. The legacy of those years is stark: more than 300 huskies turned away, 322 in 2021 alone. And in 2024, 1,266 Siberian Huskies were known to have been euthanized in Louisiana — only the ones we know about.
This is not a rare or forgotten breed. The Siberian Husky is the American Kennel Club’s 14th most popular breed out of 192. The demand is real, the surrenders are real, and right now the safety net is stretched thin.
The Sanctuary would be our headquarters and our beacon: a public facility, open to the community, where people can learn about the breed, interact with huskies in person, and adopt. A brick-and-mortar home means we lean far less on the handful of scarce foster homes that carry the whole rescue today. It gives every husky a safe place to land while the right family finds them — and it gives Louisiana a place to fall in love with this breed the right way.
When the campaign resumes, sponsors will be the ones who build it. Three tiers, each carried forward into everything the Sanctuary becomes:
The Sanctuary campaign is currently on hold while we rebuild our foster network — the huskies in our care come first, and a strong foster base is what makes a permanent home possible. The best way to help right now is to open your home as a foster or to donate so we can keep saying yes when a husky needs us.
If you or your company would like to talk about a Sanctuary sponsorship for when the campaign reopens, we would love to hear from you.
